How do I get to Mabinay and the Bulwang caves from Dumaguete?
Short answer
Mabinay is about 87 km north-west of Dumaguete, roughly 2 hours by private car: up the coast road through Bais, then inland into the hills in the middle of the island. The caves people actually visit are the Bulwang group, about a twenty-minute ride out of the town centre, where three of them are open to complete beginners.
By private car the driver takes you to Bulwang itself and waits while you do the caves, then drives you back the same day. By Ceres bus you can reach the Mabinay terminal cheaply, but only on a service routed via Mabinay, and from the terminal you still need a tricycle out to the caves and the bus timetable for the trip back.
Already moving between Dumaguete and Bacolod? Then this is not a separate trip. Mabinay sits near the midpoint of that roughly six-hour drive, so tell us when you book the transfer and the driver builds a cave stop into it instead of a plain service break.
Step by step: Dumaguete to Mabinay
- 1Up the coast road
North out of Dumaguete on the coastal highway through Amlan and Tanjay towards Bais.
- 2Inland into the hills
From the Bais side the road turns inland and climbs into the middle of the island to Mabinay town, about 2 hours from Dumaguete in all.
- 3Out to Bulwang
On to the Bulwang caves, about twenty minutes beyond the town centre. Cave guides are arranged at the site rather than booked ahead, and guide and entrance fees are paid there.
- 4Back the same day
Your driver waits while you do the caves, a couple of hours for the three beginner ones, then takes you back down to Dumaguete.

Ways to travel, compared
- Private car with waiting driver (what we arrange)~2 hrs each way
A private car from your Dumaguete hotel to the Bulwang caves, with the driver waiting and the drive back included. No bus timetable and no tricycle. Fixed price, request a quote.
- Ceres bus + tricycle (public)~2 hrs + ~20 min
Ceres buses to Bacolod that are routed via Mabinay stop at the town terminal; check the signboard, because Ceres also runs that route via Bayawan and via San Carlos, and neither comes near Mabinay. Then a tricycle out to Bulwang, and the bus timetable for the trip back.
Dumaguete to Mabinay: FAQs
How far is Mabinay from Dumaguete?
About 87 km north-west, roughly 2 hours by road: up the coast through Bais, then inland into the hills. The Bulwang caves are about another twenty minutes beyond the town centre.
Is Mabinay a day trip from Dumaguete?
Yes, with a private car and a waiting driver: about 2 hours each way plus a couple of hours in the three beginner caves at Bulwang. It is a long way for one sight, so it suits travellers who genuinely want the caving. If you are heading to Bacolod anyway, stopping on the way is the better use of the road time.
Can we stop at Mabinay on the way to Bacolod instead?
Yes, and it is the way we would suggest doing it. Mabinay sits near the midpoint of the roughly six-hour drive between Dumaguete and Bacolod, so the caves are already on your road. Tell us when you book the transfer and your driver builds in a couple of hours at Bulwang, with the luggage staying in the car.
Do we need caving experience?
Not for the three at Bulwang. Panligawan and Pandalihan are shallow, with stone steps and open roofs, and Crystal Cave has a built walkway through it, so sensible shoes are enough and a local guide goes with you. Odloman and Cayaso are for equipped, experienced cavers only, and are not add-ons to a transfer.
How much are the cave guide and entrance fees?
They are paid locally at Bulwang and set by the barangay, so we do not publish figures that go out of date. What we quote is the transport: a fixed price for the private car and the waiting driver.
Can you do the return trip, Mabinay back to Dumaguete?
Yes. The same private car and driver, Mabinay back to Dumaguete over the same ~87 km. Ask for both legs in one quote request and we price the round trip together. If the way back ends somewhere other than where you started, say where in the Anything else? box on the quote form and we quote that leg instead of the reverse of this one.
How much notice do you need - can I still book this for tomorrow?
Usually yes. There is no minimum notice on this route and no cut-off hour, so a request for tomorrow, or for later today, is worth sending rather than writing off. What settles it is whether a vetted driver is free for the time you need, and you will have the answer and the price by email the same day, usually within a few hours. An early start is routine here rather than a complication. The part that gets harder with less notice is choice - holding a particular vehicle size or an exact pickup hour - not whether the journey can happen, so send the date and, if the timing is tight, the hour you need to be moving.
Do I pay anything up front, and when do I pay the rest?
Nothing to ask for a quote. Once you are happy with the price it is two steps, not a choice between two: a booking fee paid online (card, bank transfer or GCash) confirms the trip and is what gets you your written confirmation, then the balance goes directly to your driver at the end of the journey. The fee is part of the all-in figure you agreed rather than an extra on top of it, and your quote states it before you pay. Free cancellation more than 72 hours before pickup refunds the fee in full.
