Bais dolphin watching
Watching a pod of wild dolphins break the surface beside your boat in the Tañon Strait is, for us, the best morning out in Negros Oriental - and Bais City, about 45 km north of Dumaguete, is where it starts.
The strait between Negros and Cebu is a protected channel that is home to wild dolphins and, in season, passing whales. Boats head out from the Bais wharf in the morning to look for the pods, then often continue to the long white Manjuyod sandbar. Manjuyod is a tidal sand bank, so what you find there is set by the tide on your date: around low water it is a broad dry bar with shallow turquoise water off the edge, and at high water most of it is under the sea.
The drive up from Dumaguete takes an hour to an hour and a half. The boat and any sandbar cottage are arranged at Bais and paid locally.
Sightings are best early and the boat schedule matters, so we time the private transfer to a sensible morning departure and your driver waits through the boat trip - you make the most of the water, not the wharf.

Manjuyod sandbar
A long white bar of sand standing out in turquoise shallows, sometimes called the local Maldives, with simple stilt cottages for shade and lunch. It is a tidal feature rather than an island: the sand is exposed around low water and goes back under as the tide comes in, so which date you pick decides how much of it you get.

Dolphins are seen year-round and the calmest seas are generally in the dry season, so the season picks itself. The tide is the part that actually decides your day: the Manjuyod sandbar only surfaces around low water, so the date matters more than the month. Check the tide for the days you are considering before you fix one, and go early, when the pods are liveliest and the sea is calmest.

Can I add the Manjuyod sandbar, and will the sand actually be there?
Yes, and almost every boat does both: dolphins first, then the sandbar for a swim and lunch. The thing to get right is the date rather than the booking. Manjuyod is a tidal sandbar, so it is a wide stretch of dry sand around low water and largely gone at high water, and the change is not gradual at the end - once the tide is coming in the last of it covers quickly. Boats still run either way, and shallow turquoise water over the bar is beautiful in its own right, but if the picture you have in mind is walking on the sand you want a low tide in your window.
