Bais dolphin watching
Watching a pod of wild dolphins break the surface beside your boat in the Tañon Strait is, for us, the best morning out in Negros Oriental - and Bais City, about 45 km north of Dumaguete, is where it starts.
The strait between Negros and Cebu is a protected channel that is home to wild dolphins and, in season, passing whales. Boats head out from the Bais wharf in the morning to look for the pods, then often continue to the long white Manjuyod sandbar for lunch and a swim in knee-deep turquoise water.
The drive up from Dumaguete takes an hour to an hour and a half. The boat and any sandbar cottage are arranged at Bais and paid locally.
Sightings are best early and the boat schedule matters, so we time the private transfer to a sensible morning departure and your driver waits through the boat trip - you make the most of the water, not the wharf.
