How do I do the Bais dolphin watching day tour from Dumaguete?

The Bais day tour combines wild dolphin watching on the Tañon Strait with a stop at the long white Manjuyod sandbar. Bais City is about 45 km north of Dumaguete, an hour to an hour and a half by road, and the boats leave from the Bais wharf in the morning when the dolphins are most active and the sea is calmest. One thing decides how the second half of that morning looks, and it is worth settling before you book: Manjuyod is a tidal sandbar, dry and wide around low water and mostly under the sea at high water, so the day is best booked onto a date whose tide suits it.

How long is the Bais day tour?

Will we definitely see dolphins?
The dolphins are wild, so sightings are common but never guaranteed. Going early gives the best chance, and the Manjuyod sandbar makes the day worthwhile either way.
Why does the date matter for the Manjuyod sandbar?
Because Manjuyod is a sandbar and not an island, and the sea covers it. It is a bank of sand that stands clear of the water around low tide and is largely submerged at high tide, and once the tide turns the last of the exposed sand goes under fairly quickly. That is why we ask which dates you are considering rather than just taking the one you name: the low water moves through the day from one date to the next, so a morning boat lands on dry sand on some days and over the bar on others. Neither is a wasted trip, the dolphins are the reason to come and the shallow water over the bar is lovely, but if you want to stand on the sand the date has to be chosen for it. Can the tour finish at Dumaguete airport on our departure day?
Yes, for an afternoon flight. Be back in the car at the Bais wharf about three and a half hours before departure: an hour and a half for the road at its slow end plus the two hours Cebu Pacific asks you to be at the airport. That makes a 3 PM flight an 11:30 AM wharf departure and a 5 PM flight a 1:30 PM departure. A 1 PM flight means leaving at 9:30 AM, so keep the dolphins and shorten or drop the sandbar lunch. A morning flight will not fit. Your luggage stays with the driver, and the airport is on the Bais side of Dumaguete, so the car reaches departures before the city. How much notice do you need - can I still book this for tomorrow?
Usually yes for tomorrow, and there is no minimum notice and no cut-off hour. The clock is the thing to be clear about rather than the notice: this is an early boat, so your driver collects you from Dumaguete early and an enquiry arriving in the afternoon is a booking for tomorrow rather than for today.
