Dumaguete, gateway to the south
Dumaguete is where most southern Negros trips begin - a friendly seaside university city whose Rizal Boulevard, cafes and easy pace tend to win people over within their first evening.
It anchors the whole south-east of the island and is the launch point for the region’s best days out: Apo Island’s turtles, the Valencia uplands and Casaroro Falls, the Balinsasayao Twin Lakes, Bais dolphin watching and the Siquijor ferry.
The city’s own airport is at Sibulan, just 7 km north, a 10 to 15 minute drive in. Many travellers also arrive overland from Cebu: a drive down to Cebu’s southern tip, then a short fast-craft crossing from Liloan (Santander) to Sibulan, right next to Dumaguete - about 20 to 30 minutes on the water.
However you arrive, a private car with a driver who knows the south makes getting settled and exploring simple.

- Tricycle / taxi (public)~15-20 min
Tricycles and taxis run from Sibulan airport into Dumaguete, but for onward day trips a private car with a waiting driver is far simpler.
