How do I get to Dumaguete from Cebu?
Short answer
The usual way from Cebu to Dumaguete is a long drive down the length of Cebu and a short boat across the end of it. From the Cebu South Bus Terminal to Liloan port at Santander, on Cebu’s southern tip, is about 136 km, which is roughly two hours of free-flow road and realistically three to four with Cebu City traffic and the coast towns. Then the sea part is almost nothing: the Tañon Strait is only about 6.5 km wide at that point, and the fast craft crosses to Sibulan in 20 to 30 minutes, nine sailings a day each way from 4:30 AM to 10:30 PM. The ferry ticket is a fixed public fare paid at the port.
Sibulan pier is 7 km from Dumaguete, a 15 to 20 minute run in, which is why this crossing is the one to use if Dumaguete is where you are actually going. Cheapest way to do the whole trip, and the least handling - but it is a long day, and you are on the timetable rather than your own.

Every southbound service leaves the Cebu South Bus Terminal on N. Bacalso Avenue. Take the east-coast one, timetabled Cebu City to Bato (Samboan) via Oslob, Liloan Port and Santander - it is the one that calls at Liloan. The west-coast service via Moalboal and Barili is also signed for Bato and never touches Liloan, so pick by the coast, not by the windscreen. Buy tickets at the terminal on the day.

How far is Dumaguete from Cebu?
About 136 km of road from Cebu City down to Liloan port at Santander, then a strait only around 6.5 km wide, then 7 km from Sibulan pier into Dumaguete - so roughly 150 km door to door, but almost all of it is the drive down Cebu. That is why the trip takes four to five hours while the sea crossing itself is 20 to 30 minutes. There is no bridge; the water has to be crossed by boat.
Is there a bus from Cebu to Dumaguete?
Yes, and you do not have to change. Ceres runs direct Cebu City to Dumaguete services, and the bus drives onto the RORO ferry for the crossing, so you stay in your seat and keep your luggage with you the whole way. Reckon on five to six hours. If you would rather do it in pieces, take the east-coast service from the Cebu South Bus Terminal - timetabled to Bato (Samboan) via Oslob, Liloan Port and Santander - get off at Liloan Port and cross as a foot passenger. Is Santander the same as Liloan port?
Yes. Santander is the municipality at the southern tip of Cebu and Liloan is the barangay within it where the pier is, so tickets, buses and hotels use the two names more or less interchangeably. The port is signed Liloan Port. It is also not the Liloan north of Cebu City, which is a different town entirely and a long way in the wrong direction - if you are heading for Negros, you want the southern one.
Can you take us straight to Dauin or Apo Island instead of Dumaguete?
Yes, and it is one continuous run rather than a detour. Dauin is about 22 km from Sibulan pier, some 15 km beyond Dumaguete on the same coast road, so allow around 45 minutes from the boat; Malatapay, the jump-off for Apo Island, is a little further. How long is the ferry from Cebu to Dumaguete?
The fast-craft crossing from Liloan (Santander) to Sibulan is about 20 to 30 minutes, with nine sailings a day each way between 4:30 AM and 10:30 PM. Times change with weather and season and this crossing has been re-timed repeatedly through 2026, so confirm the current schedule and arrive at the port in good time. Slower overnight ferries also run direct from Cebu City port.
