Short answer

Getting back to Dumaguete from Apo Island is two trips. First the banca across to Malatapay beach in Zamboanguita, roughly 30 to 45 minutes depending on the sea. Then about 25 km north up the coast road to Dumaguete, 40 to 60 minutes through Dauin and Bacong. Call it an hour and a half to two hours of moving, plus the handover on the beach.

Apo has no pier: the bancas beach-land, and you come back on the boat that took you out, so the return time is fixed with your boatman rather than picked from a timetable. Mornings are usually the calm half of the day, and the afternoon has a hard end, covered in the FAQs below.

Most people making this trip have stayed a night or two on the island and are moving on: a night in Dumaguete before the boat to Siquijor or Cebu, a flight out of Sibulan the next day, or straight on to a Dauin resort. A private car meets you where the boats land and drops you at the door, with no tricycle up the beach and no bus change at the highway.

Step by step: Apo Island to Dumaguete

  1. 1
Agree the return with your boatman

Your resort or boatman arranges the crossing back, the same way you came out. Boat hire and the marine-sanctuary fees are paid on site and sit outside our quote.

  2. 2
Met on the beach at Malatapay

Your driver waits where the bancas land, not up at the highway, and the bags and any kit go straight in the back.

  3. 3
    North up the coast road

Through Zamboanguita, Dauin and Bacong to the edge of Dumaguete, about 25 km and 40 to 60 minutes.

  4. 4
    Dropped where you are staying

Door to door to your hotel, the Rizal Boulevard seafront or the ferry pier. Send the address with your quote request.

Ways to travel, compared

  • Private transfer from Malatapay (what we arrange)~40-60 min

A private air-conditioned car meeting your boat at Malatapay and running you to your Dumaguete drop-off, with room for dive and snorkel kit. Fixed, all-in price for the car, request a quote.

  • Tricycle + Ceres bus (public)~1-1.5 hrs

A tricycle up from the beach to the Malatapay junction, a northbound Ceres bus into the Dumaguete terminal, then a tricycle to your hotel. Cheapest, but three legs with wet luggage.

  • Tricycle direct (local)~1-1.5 hrs

Some tricycles at Malatapay will run the whole way north. Fine with a light bag, uncomfortable over 25 km with dive kit or a suitcase.

Apo Island to Dumaguete: FAQs

How long does it take to get from Apo Island to Dumaguete?

About 30 to 45 minutes on the boat to Malatapay, then 40 to 60 minutes by road for the roughly 25 km north, so an hour and a half to two hours including the handover on the beach.

What time is the last boat off Apo Island?

Yes, and it is the one clock on this trip. Boats off the island generally leave between about 2 and 3 in the afternoon, and 4pm is the latest the coast guard allows, brought forward if the sea is getting up. There is no printed timetable: you come back on the boat that took you out, so agree the return time with your boatman before you get off at the island. From Malatapay it is 40 to 60 minutes up the coast to Dumaguete, so a boat in the early afternoon has you at your hotel well before dark. Miss it and there is no later crossing, which means a night on Apo in a basic homestay.

Where exactly does the driver meet me?

At Malatapay beach in Zamboanguita, where the Apo bancas land, rather than up on the national highway. If your resort runs its own boat back to its own beach in Dauin instead, say so with the quote request, because that changes the pickup point and shortens the drive.

Is there room for dive gear and luggage?

Yes - say how many sets of dive or snorkel gear are coming in the "Anything bulky?" box on the quote form, with your bag count, and the car is sized to the load instead of the passenger count. Everything comes off the banca at once and packed wet, so it all has to fit in the one car waiting on the beach.

I am catching a boat or a flight the next day. Can you do that leg too?

Yes. Ask for both in one quote: Malatapay to Dumaguete now, and the pier or Sibulan airport run the next day, and we price them together. If the flight is the same day, use the Apo Island to Dumaguete airport page instead, because that day is timed from the check-in counter, not the boat.

Can you do the return trip, Dumaguete back to Apo Island?

Yes. Your boat brings you back to the mainland jump-off, where your driver picks you up for the road leg to Apo Island. The boat is arranged and paid there, as on the way out. Ask for both road legs in one quote request and we price them together. If the way back ends somewhere other than where you started, say where in the Anything else? box on the quote form and we quote that leg instead of the reverse of this one.

How much notice do you need - can I still book this for tomorrow?

Usually yes. There is no minimum notice on this route and no cut-off hour, so a request for tomorrow, or for later today, is worth sending rather than writing off. What settles it is whether a vetted driver is free for the time you need, and you will have the answer and the price by email the same day, usually within a few hours. An early start is routine here rather than a complication. The part that gets harder with less notice is choice - holding a particular vehicle size or an exact pickup hour - not whether the journey can happen, so send the date and, if the timing is tight, the hour you need to be moving.

Do I pay anything up front, and when do I pay the rest?

Nothing to ask for a quote. Once you are happy with the price it is two steps, not a choice between two: a booking fee paid online (card, bank transfer or GCash) confirms the trip and is what gets you your written confirmation, then the balance goes directly to your driver at the end of the journey. The fee is part of the all-in figure you agreed rather than an extra on top of it, and your quote states it before you pay. Free cancellation more than 72 hours before pickup refunds the fee in full.

Do you book the boat, or do I?

Neither of us books it ahead, and that is the useful part: nothing has to be reserved before you travel for Apo Island. The boat hire and the marine-sanctuary fee are arranged and paid at Malatapay on the day, so what you need from us is the drive there timed to the morning sea conditions and a driver who waits. We quote the private road leg each side; the boat and the fee are not in our figure and we do not mark them up. Tell us roughly when you want to be on the water in the "Ferry or boat" box and we will set the pickup.

Travelling the other way?

Dumaguete → Apo Island

Your boat brings you back to the mainland jump-off, where your driver picks you up for the road leg to Apo Island, with the banca arranged and paid there as on the way out. Ask for both road legs in one request and we'll price them together.

We'll pre-fill Dumaguete → Apo Island on the form. Just add your dates and details.

Coming back to somewhere else - a different town, the airport, a pier for an onward boat? Say where in the Anything else? box on the form and we price the return to that instead of back to the start.

Starting somewhere else?

We also run to Dumaguete from these starting points. Each page has its own timing and a quote form already filled in for that pickup.
