How do I get from Apo Island to Dumaguete airport in time for my flight?
Short answer
Getting off Apo Island to a flight is two trips, not one. First the banca back across to Malatapay beach in Zamboanguita, roughly 30 to 45 minutes depending on the sea. Then about 33 km by road up the coast to Dumaguete-Sibulan Airport (DGT), which is 45 to 60 minutes through Dumaguete in the daytime and closer to 40 before the city wakes up. Call it an hour and a half to two hours of moving, plus whatever the handover on the beach takes.
The number that catches people out is the crossing, because it is the one leg nobody controls. Apo has no pier: boats come in and go out off the sand, so a swell that would not trouble a ferry is enough to hold a banca. Mornings are usually the calm half of the day here, which is why the sensible shape of a departure day is early boat, unhurried drive, rather than a boat timed neatly to the counter.

Work back from the counter, then add the sea. Domestic check-in closes 45 minutes before departure at both airlines serving DGT, and Cebu Pacific asks passengers to be at the airport two hours ahead. The drive from Malatapay is 45 to 60 minutes and the crossing is 30 to 45 minutes when it runs. For a midday flight that means an early-morning boat, not a late one. Can I fly out the same day I leave Apo Island?
Yes if you have only been snorkelling, and it is comfortable for an afternoon or evening departure. Take the earliest boat you can rather than the one that lines up neatly with the flight, because the crossing is the leg that can move and the road is not where the time goes missing. I have been diving at Apo Island. How long before I can fly?
The Divers Alert Network guidance is a minimum 12-hour surface interval after a single no-decompression dive, and at least 18 hours after multiple dives in a day or several days of diving. Almost nobody dives Apo once, so 18 hours is the number that matters: your last dive day has to finish the day before you fly. Plan the final day dry, and we time the airport run around it.
What happens if the boat cannot cross because of the weather?
It happens on this coast, and it is the reason we ask for the flight number rather than just a pickup time. If the sea holds your boat, tell us as soon as you know and we move the car; the driver is not sitting on a meter at Malatapay. If a crossing is looking doubtful and the flight is the same day, the honest answer is to come off the island the evening before and stay in Dauin or Dumaguete, which is a much cheaper problem than a missed flight.
Where exactly does the driver meet me?

Is Dumaguete airport the same place as Sibulan pier?
No, and people mix them up in both directions. Dumaguete-Sibulan Airport (DGT) and Sibulan port, where the fast craft to Liloan in Cebu leaves, are both in Sibulan and only minutes apart, but they are different places. If you are flying, you want the airport; if you are crossing to Cebu by sea, you want the pier. Say which one and your driver goes to the right gate.
Can we stop on the way north?
Yes, and it is the usual answer to an early boat and a late flight. Dauin, the Dumaguete seafront and Valencia are all on or near the way, and the car can hold your luggage while you use the gap.
