Can I go dolphin watching in Bais on the day I fly out of Dumaguete, and what time do I have to leave the wharf?
Short answer
Bais is about 40 km from Dumaguete-Sibulan Airport (DGT), an hour to an hour and a half by private car back down the coast. The useful thing about that number is where the terminal sits: the airport is at Sibulan, about 7 km north of Dumaguete, so it is on the Bais side of the city. Driving back from the wharf you reach departures before you reach Dumaguete, and there is no reason to go into town and out again.
That is what makes a dolphin morning and an afternoon flight fit together, and most people assume it does not. Boats leave the Bais wharf early because the sea is calmest and the pods most active soon after sunrise, and the trip usually carries on to the Manjuyod sandbar, which is a tidal bank - broad dry sand around low water, shallow sea over it at high water. Finish that mid-morning to early afternoon, and a mid-afternoon departure is comfortable rather than a scramble.
The short version: back at the car about three and a half hours before the flight. A 3 in the afternoon departure means leaving the wharf around 11:30, a 5 o clock departure around 1:30. A morning flight does not work and we will say so. The FAQs below do the same arithmetic for other times, and cover what to drop if the timing is tight.
Step by step: Bais (dolphin watching) to Dumaguete-Sibulan Airport (DGT)
- 1Send us the flight and where you are staying
Flight number, departure time, and whether you are coming from a Bais hotel or starting the day in Dumaguete. We work the pickup back from the counter closing and tell you straight away if the flight time leaves no room for the boat.
- 2Early start at the wharf
Dolphins are most active soon after sunrise and the sea is calmest then, so the boat goes out early. Your driver has you at the Bais wharf for it. The boat and any sandbar cottage are booked and paid at the wharf, outside our quote.
- 3The driver and your bags wait
You check out once. The luggage stays in the car with your driver at the wharf while you are on the water, so there is no left-luggage to find and no second ride back for the bags.
- 4South to Sibulan, not into Dumaguete
About 40 km back down the coast, an hour to an hour and a half depending on traffic. The terminal comes up about 7 km short of Dumaguete, so the city is behind the airport rather than on the way to it.
- 5Dropped at departures
DGT is a small single-terminal airport, so it is a short walk from the car to the check-in counter with your bags.

Ways to travel, compared
- Dolphin morning + airport transfer (what we arrange)~1-1.5 hrs drive + your time on the water
One private air-conditioned car: your hotel to the Bais wharf for an early boat, the driver and your luggage waiting through the trip, then straight to DGT departures. Timed back from your flight, fixed all-in price, request a quote.
- Bais wharf to Tañon Strait boathalf day
The dolphin-watching and Manjuyod sandbar boat is arranged at the wharf and paid locally, outside our quote. It is the half of the day we do not control, which is the reason to give it the early slot and keep the margin on the road.
- Ceres bus + tricycle (public)~2 hrs+
A tricycle from the wharf into Bais, a southbound Ceres bus down the coast, then another tricycle out to the terminal from the highway. Cheap, but it is three changes with wet bags against a check-in cut-off, and the bus does not stop at the airport door.
Bais (dolphin watching) to Dumaguete-Sibulan Airport (DGT): FAQs
What time do I need to leave Bais for my flight?
Be back at the car about three and a half hours before the departure time. Work back from the airport: Cebu Pacific asks passengers to be at the airport two hours ahead, and check-in closes 45 minutes before a domestic departure at both carriers serving DGT. The drive is about 40 km and takes an hour to an hour and a half, so use the slow end. A 3 in the afternoon flight means leaving the wharf around 11:30, a 5 o clock flight around 1:30, and a 1 in the afternoon flight around 9:30, which is tight against the sandbar half of the trip. Send us the flight number and we set the pickup rather than leaving you to guess.
My flight is in the morning. Can I still go dolphin watching first?
No, and we would rather say so than sell it. The boat goes out around first light and the sandbar half runs on into the morning, so three and a half hours back from a 10 in the morning departure would have you leaving the wharf before the boat returns. Do Bais on an earlier day and keep the flight morning as the short run from your hotel: Dumaguete city is 10 to 15 minutes from the terminal, 20 to 25 in traffic.
Do we have to drive back into Dumaguete first?
No, and this is the part people get wrong when they plan it themselves. Dumaguete-Sibulan Airport is about 7 km north of the city at Sibulan, which puts it on the Bais side. Coming down the coast you pass the terminal before you reach Dumaguete, which is why the airport is about 40 km from Bais and the city is about 45. Nothing is gained by going into town, and in the daytime traffic it costs you.
Where do our bags go while we are on the boat?
They stay in the car with your driver at the wharf. That is the point of booking the day as one transfer: you check out, load everything once, and the same car takes you from the wharf to departures. Keep a dry top, a change of shoes and anything you need at the airport in a day bag, because you will not want to open the checked luggage in the car park after the sandbar.
The flight is early afternoon and the timing is tight. What do we drop?
The sandbar, not the dolphins. The pods are the part that only works early and the part you came for; the Manjuyod stop is the swim and lunch afterwards, and it is the flexible half. Check the tide before you decide, though, because it may make the choice for you: Manjuyod only stands clear of the water around low tide, so on a date whose low water has already passed there is less out there to shorten. Tell the boatman at the wharf that you are flying and want the dolphins then a short sandbar stop rather than lunch out there, and tell us the flight so the car is ready when you land back. If the margin is still thin we will say so before you book.
What if the boat runs late or the sea is rough?
The boat is arranged and paid at the wharf and we do not control its timing, which is exactly why the arithmetic uses the slow end of the drive rather than the fast one. Your driver waits and leaves when you are back. If the trip is called off for weather you still have the car and the transfer, and there is time for a proper lunch on the way down instead.
Is Dumaguete airport the same place as Sibulan pier?
No. Dumaguete-Sibulan Airport (DGT) and Sibulan port, where the fast craft to Liloan in Cebu leaves, are both in Sibulan and only minutes apart, but they are different places. If you are flying, you want the airport; if you are crossing to Cebu by sea, you want the pier. Say which one and your driver goes to the right gate.
How far is Dumaguete airport from Bais?
About 40 km, an hour to an hour and a half by private car down the coast road. Bais itself is about 45 km north of Dumaguete city, so the terminal is the nearer of the two.
Can you do the return trip, Dumaguete-Sibulan Airport (DGT) back to Bais (dolphin watching)?
Yes. The same private car and driver, Dumaguete-Sibulan Airport (DGT) back to Bais (dolphin watching) over the same ~40 km. Ask for both legs in one quote request and we price the round trip together. If the way back ends somewhere other than where you started, say where in the Anything else? box on the quote form and we quote that leg instead of the reverse of this one.
How much notice do you need - can I still book this for tomorrow?
Usually yes. There is no minimum notice on this route and no cut-off hour, so a request for tomorrow, or for later today, is worth sending rather than writing off. What settles it is whether a vetted driver is free for the time you need, and you will have the answer and the price by email the same day, usually within a few hours. An early start is routine here rather than a complication. The part that gets harder with less notice is choice - holding a particular vehicle size or an exact pickup hour - not whether the journey can happen, so send the date and, if the timing is tight, the hour you need to be moving.
Do I pay anything up front, and when do I pay the rest?
Nothing to ask for a quote. Once you are happy with the price it is two steps, not a choice between two: a booking fee paid online (card, bank transfer or GCash) confirms the trip and is what gets you your written confirmation, then the balance goes directly to your driver at the end of the journey. The fee is part of the all-in figure you agreed rather than an extra on top of it, and your quote states it before you pay. Free cancellation more than 72 hours before pickup refunds the fee in full.
