The simplest way to get around Negros is to have a car and driver of your own for the day. You book a block of time, half day of about 4 hours, a full day of about 8, or a long 12-hour day, and the vehicle is entirely yours: a Dumaguete city and Valencia loop, the uplands, beaches down the coast, or nothing decided until you are in the car. Your driver knows the roads, waits wherever you stop, and the route is whatever you make it.
It works like a personal chauffeur rather than a taxi. There is no meter running and no negotiating each leg: one fixed price for the block of hours, agreed before you travel. Change your mind at lunch, add a stop, stay longer at a viewpoint, and the day simply flexes around you.

The most popular block, and the one worth planning. Valencia plus the Twin Lakes is roughly 65 km all in, but the Twin Lakes climb runs an hour to an hour and a half each way, so budget about 3 hours driving. Bais and back is about 93 km of coast road, closer to 2.5 hours driving with the strip towns counted, which leaves a good half day on the boat. One mountain stop plus one coastal stop is a comfortable 8 hours; two mountain stops is a full one.

For the big trips: a Bais dolphin day with a second stop on the way home, a far-coast run, or two separate mountain roads in one swing. Early start, late finish, and the driver handles every kilometre while you rest between stops. This is the block to take if your day has two climbs in it and you would rather not watch the clock.

How does hiring a driver by the hour work?
You book a block of time, about 4, 8 or 12 hours, and the car and driver are exclusively yours for it. We agree one fixed price up front, the clock starts at pickup, and where you go within the block is completely up to you.
Do I have to plan the route in advance?
No. Some travellers send us a full plan, others just a first stop. You can decide the day as you go and your driver will suggest timings so everything fits. If you tell us roughly what you want to see, we will happily sketch a sensible route with the quote.
Which block should I choose?
As a rule of thumb: 4 hours covers the city or the Valencia uplands; 8 hours comfortably combines one mountain stop with one coastal one, or reaches Bais and back; 12 hours is for the big, far-coast or two-climb days. The thing that decides it is not distance but how many separate mountain roads you want to go up, because each one has to be driven back down again. Describe the day and we will recommend the right block.
Can I fit two mountain stops, like the Twin Lakes and Baslay, into one 8-hour day?
Yes, but know what you are buying. The Twin Lakes sit above Sibulan and Baslay sits above Dauin, on two different spurs of the same mountains, and there is no road along the ridge between them: the only way across is back down to the coast and along it, about 49 km. Picked up at Sibulan airport, up to the lakes, across to Baslay and down to a Dumaguete hotel is roughly 100 km, and because both climbs run far slower than flat road, it is closer to 3.5 hours of driving than the 2.5 the distance suggests. That leaves about 4 hours for two stops, which works, but it is a full day rather than a relaxed one. If you want time to sit at both, take the 12-hour block.
Are the mountain roads suitable for a car or a van?
They are two different answers, so we would rather give you both before you book. The Twin Lakes access road is sealed the whole way to the park gate, but it is steep, winding and has blind curves, and it is the only road in or out; it needs a vehicle in good order and a driver who knows the descent, which is exactly what you are hiring. The climb to Baslay is not sealed. The final stretch off the Dauin road is a rough, rocky track up to a coffee farm at around 860 m, and after heavy rain it is sometimes not sensible at all. Tell us at the quote stage if Baslay is on your list, because it changes which vehicle we send and it is the one stop we will occasionally advise you against on the day.
Can we extend on the day if we are having a good time?
Usually yes, if the vehicle has no booking after yours. Agree the extra hours with us and the driver rather than assuming, and we keep the pricing as clear as the original quote.
