Dauin dive coast & muck diving
Dauin is the strip of coast about 15 km south of Dumaguete where most of the diving on this side of Negros actually happens. It is a quiet coastal town on the Bohol Sea, with beach resorts lined up along a shore of dark volcanic sand and a chain of protected marine sanctuaries a few fin kicks offshore.
Divers know it for muck diving: unglamorous-looking black sand that turns out to hold some of the strangest small marine life anywhere. Frogfish, flamboyant cuttlefish, mimic octopus, blue-ringed octopus, nudibranchs and bluespotted stingrays are all regulars, which is why Dauin gets compared to the Lembeh Strait in Indonesia.
It is also the mainland base for Apo Island, which is a barangay of Dauin, not a separate town. Most Dauin resorts run their own boats out to the island; independent visitors usually drive a little further south to the public boats at Malatapay in Zamboanguita.
Above the coast, the town runs back into the foothills of Mount Talinis, with the sulphur hot springs at Baslay and the Mag-aso and Malungcay springs inside the geothermal reserve. On the seafront in the poblacion, the San Nicolas de Tolentino church is the oldest in the province, with the ruins of two dome-shaped watchtowers on the beach in front of it, built to watch for raiders coming in off the sea.

- Ceres bus (public)~40-60 min
Southbound Ceres buses from the Dumaguete terminal towards Bayawan or Zamboanguita pass through Dauin and will drop you on the highway. Cheapest, but you finish with a tricycle ride down to the beach with your bags.
- Tricycle or habal-habal (local)~30-45 min
Tricycles run the coast road from Dumaguete and Bacong. Fine for a light day bag, cramped and slow with dive kit or a suitcase.

Apo Island belongs to Dauin. Resort boats run out from the beach, or drive south to the public bancas at Malatapay.
Hot springs and old stone
Sulphur springs at Baslay in the hills, and the province's oldest church with two ruined watchtowers on the shore.
Best time to visit
Diving is year-round. The driest, calmest stretch is roughly January to April, with the wettest months around June to October; visibility is usually best on a calm morning before the afternoon wind gets up.
