Short answer

Silay is about 15 km north of Bacolod up the coastal highway, 15 to 20 minutes by private car outside the city rush. It is the closest thing Negros Occidental has to a heritage town: more than thirty ancestral houses declared part of the Silay National Historical Landmark, of which a handful are genuinely open to visit.

A private car with a waiting driver is the straightforward way to do it as a half day from Bacolod. You are dropped in the old town, walk between the houses at your own pace, and the car is there when you are ready - which matters, because the houses are spread over a few blocks and there is nowhere convenient to leave bags.

Northbound jeepneys and Ceres buses also pass through Silay and cost very little, but they drop you on the highway rather than at the houses and you travel back on their schedule.

Step by step: Bacolod to Silay

  1. 1
    Pickup at your Bacolod hotel

Your driver collects you wherever you are staying in Bacolod at the time you choose.

  2. 2
    North up the coastal highway

The run to Silay is about 15 km, usually 15 to 20 minutes, passing the airport turn-off on the way.

  3. 3
    Walk the heritage core

The Jalandoni "Pink House" is the one you can walk into - Tuesday to Sunday and holidays, 9am to 5pm, closed Mondays. Balay Negrense has been closed for conservation since 2023 and the Hofilena house is visited by prior arrangement. The San Diego Pro-Cathedral and El Ideal Bakery are a short walk apart. Entry is paid at the door.

  4. 4
Back to Bacolod, or on somewhere else

Return to your hotel, carry on to The Ruins in Talisay for the dusk lighting, or finish at the airport if you are flying out the same day.

Ways to travel, compared

  • Private transfer with a waiting driver (what we arrange)~15-20 min each way

A private air-conditioned car from your Bacolod hotel, with the driver waiting while you walk the heritage streets. Fixed all-in price for the car, request a quote.

  • Ceres bus or jeepney (public)~40-60 min

Northbound buses and jeepneys from Bacolod pass through Silay for very little. They set you down on the highway rather than at the houses, and the return runs on their timetable, not yours.

Bacolod to Silay: FAQs

How far is Silay from Bacolod?

About 15 km north, 15 to 20 minutes by private car outside the city rush. Bacolod-Silay Airport sits between the two, roughly 5 km short of the heritage streets.

Is Silay worth a whole day?

Honestly, no - and less so than it used to be. Of the thirty-odd declared houses, one is currently a walk-in museum, so ninety minutes to two hours covers the walkable core comfortably. It pairs well with The Ruins in Talisay on the other side of the city, or with an airport arrival or departure.

Which houses can I actually go inside?

Today, realistically one: the 1908 Bernardino Jalandoni "Pink House" on Rizal Street, open Tuesday to Sunday and holidays, 9am to 5pm and closed Mondays. Balay Negrense, the province’s first museum, has been closed since 2023 for a five-year conservation programme with no announced reopening date. The 1934 Hofilena house, first opened to the public in 1962, is still a family home and is arranged ahead rather than walked into. The rest are private homes on ordinary streets.

Can the driver wait while we walk around?

Yes, and it is how most people do it. The car waits with your bags while you walk between the houses, then takes you back to Bacolod, on to Talisay, or to the airport.

Can you do the return trip, Silay back to Bacolod?

Yes. The same private car and driver, Silay back to Bacolod over the same ~15 km. Ask for both legs in one quote request and we price the round trip together.

Landed at Dumaguete and our driver was right there with a sign. Easy run down to Dauin and the price was exactly as quoted. So much calmer than sorting a ride at the airport.
