Lakawon Island, the resort island off northern Negros
Lakawon is a small island off Cadiz City on the north coast of Negros Occidental, about 4 to 5 km offshore. It is a privately managed resort island rather than a public one: everybody arrives through the same mainland ticketing office at Cadiz Viejo, everybody is assigned to a scheduled boat, and the crossing takes roughly 15 to 20 minutes.
That structure is the single most important thing to understand before you plan the day, and it is the part most write-ups skip. Lakawon does not run a boat whenever you turn up. The resort publishes day-tour departures from Cadiz at 7:00, 9:00 and 11:00 in the morning, and the regular boat needs a minimum number of passengers each way. The road from Bacolod is only about an hour in a private car, but it is an hour you have to spend before a fixed time, not after it.
The island itself is what you would hope for from this coast: a long pale sand spit, shallow turquoise water, shade under the palms, and the TawHai floating bar moored offshore. TawHai is currently advertised as free access for guests, weather permitting, with a maximum stay of three hours per visit.
One geography note that saves people a wasted leg. Bacolod-Silay Airport is already north of Bacolod city, which means it is closer to Cadiz than the city is. If you are flying in and heading straight for the island, there is no reason to drive south into Bacolod first and then back out again.
How to get to Lakawon Island

A private car or van from your Bacolod hotel or from Bacolod-Silay Airport, straight to the Cadiz Viejo ticketing office, with the driver waiting for you and taking you back. - Ceres bus plus tricycle (public)~1.25-2 hrs, plus transfers
Northbound Ceres buses from the Bacolod north terminal serve Cadiz and can drop you at the Cadiz Viejo access road if you tell the conductor before departure. From the highway you hire a tricycle to the port. Cheapest option, and the one most likely to miss a scheduled boat, because you are waiting for a bus, then a tricycle, then the passenger minimum.

Not something we arrange or price: the crossing is the resort's own, booked and paid for at the Cadiz Viejo ticketing office along with your day-tour package. What to expect
The sandbar beach
The long pale sand spit on the sheltered side of the island, with shallow turquoise water and the mountains of mainland Negros across the channel. Swimming conditions vary along it, so ask the staff which section is safest on the day.
TawHai floating bar
The moored floating lounge off the beach, and the thing most people come to photograph. Guest access is currently advertised as free, food and drinks are paid separately, stays are capped at three hours, and it is suspended when the weather turns.
A managed island, not a wild one
Registration, payment, boat assignment and cottages are all handled at the mainland office before you sail. That makes the day easy to organise, and it also means you follow the resort schedule rather than your own.
The three-hour rule and the weather rule
Two constraints worth knowing in advance: TawHai visits are capped at three hours, and boats and the floating bar are suspended in adverse conditions. In unsettled weather the resort asks you to contact them to confirm the island is open before you set off.
Book at least a day ahead
Same-day online booking is not permitted; the resort asks for online day-trip bookings at least one day before travel. That is a real planning constraint if Lakawon is your idea on the morning of a free day.
Best time to visit
Aim for the 7:00 or 9:00 boat rather than the 11:00 one, which means leaving Bacolod somewhere around 5:30 to 6:30 in the morning by private car. That gives you the island in good light and a return with daylight left for the drive. The dry months from roughly December to May are the reliable ones: boats and the floating bar are weather-dependent, and a cancelled crossing is a cancelled day.

How do I get to Lakawon Island from Bacolod?
Drive north to the Cadiz Viejo mainland ticketing office in Cadiz City, roughly 50 to 60 km, about an hour to an hour and a half by private car depending on traffic and where in Bacolod you start. You register and pay there, then take the resort boat across, about 15 to 20 minutes. By public transport it is a northbound Ceres bus from the Bacolod north terminal, a drop-off on the highway and a tricycle to the port.
What time do the boats to Lakawon leave?

Can I do Lakawon as a day trip from Bacolod?
Yes, and it is how most people visit. The trick is that the boat sets the timetable, not the road: for the 7:00 departure you want to leave Bacolod around 5:30 to 6:30 in the morning, and for the 9:00 one somewhere around 7:30. A private car with a waiting driver is the only version of this day where you are not also waiting for a bus and a tricycle at both ends.
Is it faster to go to Lakawon from Bacolod-Silay Airport?
Yes. Bacolod-Silay Airport sits north of the city, so it is already part of the way to Cadiz - roughly 35 to 45 km, about 45 minutes to an hour by private car. Driving into Bacolod first and back out again adds a pointless leg. If you are landing and heading for the island, tell us and we will meet your flight and go straight north. Bear in mind the morning boat times: an afternoon arrival generally means a Bacolod or Silay night first.
Do I need to book Lakawon in advance?
For an online day-trip booking, yes: the resort states that same-day online bookings are not permitted and asks you to book at least one day before your trip. Walk-in arrangements exist at the mainland office but are subject to capacity, weather and the boat passenger minimum, which is a lot of things to leave to chance after an hour on the road.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Boat operations and the TawHai floating bar are suspended when conditions require it, and the resort asks you to contact them to confirm whether the island is open before setting out. If your crossing is cancelled we would rather redirect the day - Silay heritage houses, The Ruins, Mambukal - than drive you to a closed port, so tell your driver early.
How much does a trip to Lakawon cost?
Entrance, the terminal fee, the round-trip boat and the day-tour package are all paid to the resort at the Cadiz Viejo mainland office, and their rates change, so we do not reprint them here. What we quote is the transport: a fixed price for the private car from Bacolod, the airport or Silay, with the driver waiting while you are on the island.
