It was Friday 17 October in 2025 and Friday 20 October in 2023, but Friday 25 October in 2024, so do not book flights around a date worked out from a formula. Day tours, the airport and private transfers all keep running throughout, it just gets busy around Dumaguete’s city centre, so it is worth booking your driver a little earlier than usual.
Buglasan is Negros Oriental’s biggest event of the year: every one of the province’s six cities and nineteen municipalities, from Canlaon City in the north to Bayawan City in the south, sends its own food, culture and street-dance troupe into Dumaguete City for one shared celebration, which is why it is billed as the "Festival of Festivals".

What Buglasan actually is
The name comes from Buglas, an old name for the island of Negros recorded on a 1572 map by the Spanish surveyor Diego Lopez de Povedano, which shows an island called Buglas Insulis. Negros Oriental’s provincial government built the festival around that name to bring the whole province together in one place, rather than each city or town celebrating its own separate fiesta alone.
It is a different event from Dumaguete City’s own Sandurot Festival, a city-only celebration of the community’s long history of welcoming different cultures. Buglasan is the wider provincial fiesta, hosted in Dumaguete but representing every part of Negros Oriental.
When it happens, and why the "third Friday" rule is wrong
Buglasan is a movable provincial fiesta held every October in Dumaguete City. Its dates are set and announced each year by the Negros Oriental provincial government through the Provincial Tourism Office, and for 2026 the announced festival period is October 15 to 25.
You will find pages, including an earlier version of this one, stating that the street dancing and showdown always land on the third Friday of October. That is a rule worked backwards from a couple of editions, and it does not hold: the big day has moved by more than a week between years.
2023
Festival ran October 14 to 22. The street dancing, showdown and music street fest were all on Friday 20 October, which was the third Friday.
2024
The Festival of Festivals street dancing and ritual showdown fell on Friday 25 October. The third Friday that year was 18 October, a full week earlier, so the rule would have had you fly home before the main event.
2025
The festival opened with an ecumenical sunrise service on Thursday 16 October, and the street dancing competition and field presentation and showdown were on Friday 17 October, the third Friday.
2026
Announced festival period October 15 to 25. The organisers had not yet published the street dancing and showdown date when we last checked this page on 10 September 2026.
What that means if you are booking flights
The eleven-day window is announced and the single biggest day is not, at least not yet. If you simply want to be in Dumaguete while the province is celebrating, any of those dates works and the city is busy throughout. If your trip depends on seeing the street dancing and showdown specifically, watch for the Provincial Tourism Office announcement rather than booking on a calendar rule, and send us the date once you have it so your airport pickup and any day tours are built around it rather than through it.
Street dancing and the show down competition
Each city and municipality enters its own troupe, costume theme and choreography, judged in a show down competition indoors and a street dance competition through the city. Themes lean on local produce and heritage, past routines have featured everything from seafood like crabs to farm vegetables, brought to life in elaborate hand-made costumes.
The showdown venue is not fixed either. It was held at the Lamberto Macias Sports and Cultural Complex in 2023, and at the Gov. Mariano Perdices Memorial Coliseum, the ground locals call the Oval, in 2024 and 2025. The street dance route runs along Dumaguete’s main thoroughfares, usually some combination of Perdices Street, the National Road, Real Street and Rizal Boulevard, and it is re-routed from year to year as well. Both are published with the schedule of events for that edition, which is another reason to plan against the announcement rather than against last year.
Getting around Dumaguete during the festival
The main festival sites are the Provincial Capitol grounds and Ninoy Aquino Freedom Park, where nightly food stalls, trade fairs and concerts run right through the eleven days, plus whichever of the Perdices Coliseum or the Lamberto Macias Sports and Cultural Complex is hosting the showdown that year, and the city-centre streets used for the street dancing.
Those routes get lively and partly congested through the festival, and city-centre hotels fill up faster than usual, but it does not affect Sibulan Airport or the rest of the Dumaguete side of Negros, only city-centre routes and timing around them.

Is Buglasan the same as MassKara?
No, they are different festivals in different provinces. MassKara is Bacolod City’s festival in Negros Occidental, known for smiling masks. Buglasan is Negros Oriental’s provincial fiesta, hosted in Dumaguete and drawing every city and town in that province rather than one city alone. Both fall in October and in 2026 they overlap: MassKara runs October 1 to 18 and Buglasan October 15 to 25, so October 15 to 18 has both running at once. They are on opposite sides of the island though, roughly 5 to 7 hours apart by road, so seeing both in one trip means building the cross-island drive into the plan rather than treating it as a day trip.
How far ahead should I book a driver for Buglasan?
