The MassKara Festival is Bacolod City’s biggest annual celebration, famous for street dancers in smiling, brightly decorated masks. Its dates are set each year by the organisers with the city government rather than by a fixed calendar rule, and for 2026 the festival period ran October 1 to 18, with post-festival activities through October 25. The three peak days have now happened: the Electric MassKara at The Upper East on Friday 16 October, the school street dance and arena competitions on Saturday 17 October, and the barangay street dance and arena competitions on Sunday 18 October, with the street dancing along Araneta Street rather than Lacson Street and the arena at the reclamation area by SM City Bacolod. If you are in Bacolod before October 25 the city is back to normal traffic outside the post-festival programme, and a transfer works as in any other week. If you are planning for MassKara 2027, wait for the organisers to announce the dates before you book flights, because the weekend moves from year to year.

What MassKara actually is
The name is a portmanteau coined by local artist Ely Santiago: "mass" (a multitude of people) plus the Spanish "cara" (face), and a pun on maskara, Filipino for mask. Every performer wears one, always decorated with a smiling face, which is where Bacolod’s "City of Smiles" nickname comes from.
The festival began in 1980, a deliberately defiant "festival of smiles" staged by the city government during a genuinely hard year: the sugar price had collapsed, Negros Occidental’s main industry at the time, and the inter-island ferry MV Don Juan had sunk with heavy loss of life among Negrense families just months earlier. It has since grown into one of the Philippines’ major annual festivals.
When it happens
MassKara does not sit on a fixed calendar rule, which is the single most common mistake people make when booking flights for it. The Bacolod Gugma Foundation Inc, the organising body, finalises the dates with the city mayor and the city announces them each year, so the festival can shift by a week or more between editions. Always plan against the announced dates for your year rather than last year’s weekend.
For 2026 the festival period was October 1 to 18, with post-festival activities running through October 25. At the launch on 11 September, Festival Director Rodney Mitz Ascalon set out the individual days. That kind of announcement is the one to wait for before booking flights for 2027. The 2026 programme ran like this:
October 1 to 8: pre-MassKara
The festival opened with a busy calendar of competitions, pageants, food events and concerts spread across the Bacolod City Government Center, the plaza, SM City Bacolod, Ayala Malls Capitol Central and Megaworld. This was MassKara without the street dancing, and the city moved normally.
Friday 16 October: Electric MassKara
The illuminated night version, with seven barangays taking part. For 2026 it was at The Upper East, the Megaworld township on the eastern side of the city, across from the Bacolod City Government Center, rather than on Lacson Street.
Saturday 17 October: school street dance and arena competitions
The school category, a field of elementary schools from around the city. Same route and same arena as the Sunday, one day earlier and less busy.
Sunday 18 October: barangay street dance and arena competitions
The main event for most visitors, with eight barangay troupes competing. If you can only be in Bacolod for one day of MassKara, the barangay competition day is usually the one to aim for.
Through to October 25: post-festival
The tail of the programme runs on after the 18th. It is not a second festival weekend, so arriving in that week expecting the streets full of dancers means you have missed the event.
Getting around Bacolod during the festival
The thing that changed for 2026 was that the crowd was not in one place. In past editions the answer was Lacson Street and the plaza, and a driver could plan around that single strip. In 2026 the three peak days sat in three different parts of Bacolod: the Electric MassKara at The Upper East out on the eastern side by the Government Center on the 16th, the street dancing along Araneta Street in the city centre on the 17th and 18th, and the arena competition down on the reclamation area between the bridgeways of SM City Bacolod, with the awarding at Bacolod Public Plaza.
Lacson Street is still the Lacson Tourism Strip and still fills up with concerts, food stalls and street parties through the festival, so it is worth avoiding if you only need to pass through. But in 2026 the street closures that actually moved a pickup were on the Araneta Street route and around the SM reclamation area on the 17th and 18th, and around The Upper East on the evening of the 16th.
Everything outside those pockets ran normally, including Bacolod-Silay Airport, the coast road and the rest of Negros. What tightens up in any MassKara year is city-centre hotel availability across the festival period and the timing of any transfer that has to cross the centre on the peak weekend.

For 2026 the organisers put the street dance competition along Araneta Street, and moved the arena competition to the reclamation area between the bridgeways of SM City Bacolod. The Electric MassKara on 16 October was at The Upper East, the Megaworld township on the eastern side of the city near the Government Center. Lacson Street remains the Lacson Tourism Strip and is still busy with concerts, food stalls and street parties, it just was not where the competitions were. The awarding stayed at Bacolod Public Plaza. Whether 2027 keeps these venues has not been announced.
Does MassKara affect getting to or from the airport?
No, Bacolod-Silay Airport itself is unaffected, and nor is the 30 to 40 minute run in from it until you reach the city. What can slow a transfer is the last part of the journey on the competition days, when the street dance route and the approach to the arena are closed or congested.
