What MassKara actually is
The name is a portmanteau coined by local artist Ely Santiago: "mass" (a multitude of people) plus the Spanish "cara" (face), and a pun on maskara, Filipino for mask. Every performer wears one, always decorated with a smiling face, which is where Bacolod’s "City of Smiles" nickname comes from.
The festival began in 1980, a deliberately defiant "festival of smiles" staged by the city government during a genuinely hard year: the sugar price had collapsed, Negros Occidental’s main industry at the time, and the inter-island ferry MV Don Juan had sunk with heavy loss of life among Negrense families just months earlier. It has since grown into one of the Philippines’ major annual festivals.
When it happens
MassKara does not sit on a fixed calendar rule, which is the single most common mistake people make when booking flights for it. The Bacolod Gugma Foundation Inc, the organising body, finalises the dates with the city mayor and the city announces them each year, so the festival can shift by a week or more between editions. Always plan against the announced dates for your year rather than last year’s weekend.

A full week after the festival period closes. This is a ceremony rather than a second festival weekend, so arriving for it expecting street dancing means you have missed the event by a week.
Getting around Bacolod during the festival
The main festival sites are Bacolod Public Plaza, the Lacson Tourism Strip (Lacson Street) and the Bacolod City Government Center. In the nights leading up to the grand parade weekend, the Electric MassKara sees illuminated dancers and floats move up and down Lacson Street, alongside concerts, food stalls and street parties, so that stretch is worth avoiding if you just need to pass through, not visit.
On the big competition days, expect the plaza and the route through the city centre to be busy and partly closed to vehicle traffic, and city-centre hotels to be fuller than usual across the October 9 to 18 stretch rather than just one weekend. It does not affect Bacolod-Silay Airport or the rest of Negros, only the city-centre route and the timing around it.
