How do I get from the Twin Lakes back down to Dumaguete?
Short answer
The Balinsasayao Twin Lakes are about 25 km from Dumaguete, an hour to an hour and a half by private car. Almost all of that is the descent: the road from the park gate down to San Jose is sealed the whole way but steep and full of blind curves, and only the last stretch along the coast through Sibulan into the city is ordinary driving.
The trap on this route is the second half of the trip, not the first. Getting up is easy to arrange, but there is no regular public transport at the gate, so anyone who arrived by habal-habal or was dropped off has to find a ride back down on the one road in or out. A driver who waits at the gate while you walk the viewpoint and paddle the lake is the whole point of booking it as one trip.
Tell us where you are going next. The descent comes out at Sibulan, north of the city, which is also where the airport and the pier for the Liloan fast craft to Cebu are, so those come before Dumaguete rather than after it. A city hotel is door to door; the Dauin dive coast and Tampi port for the Bato boat are south of the city, so the car runs on through Dumaguete to them.
Step by step: Twin Lakes (Balinsasayao) to Dumaguete
- 1Tell us how you are getting up
If we are taking you up, the same car brings you down and there is nothing extra to arrange. If you are going up another way, send the time you expect to be back at the gate and we send a car to meet you there.
- 2Your driver is at the park gate
Bags and wet things go straight in. Keep a dry top handy: it is cool and often damp up at the lakes, and much warmer by the time you reach the coast.
- 3Down the climb to San Jose
The steep part, sealed concrete but winding through blind curves. It is the slow half of the hour, and the reason a driver who knows this descent matters more than the size of the car.
- 4Along the coast through Sibulan
Ordinary driving from here. The airport and Sibulan pier are on this stretch, so if you are flying or crossing to Cebu you reach them before the city.
- 5Dropped where you are going next
Door to door to your Dumaguete hotel, the seafront, a Dauin dive resort or Tampi port. Send the address, or the boat, with your quote request.

Ways to travel, compared
- Private transfer, driver waiting at the gate (what we arrange)~1-1.5 hrs
A private car or van that waits at the park gate and brings you down to your Dumaguete hotel, Dauin, the airport or the pier, with the driver handling the descent. Fixed price, request a quote.
- Habal-habal down to San Jose, then bus or jeepney (public)~1.5 hrs+, plus waits
A motorbike taxi down the climb to San Jose, if you can find one at the gate, then a bus or jeepney along the coast to Dumaguete and a tricycle to your hotel. Cheapest, but exposed on a steep wet road, and there is no regular service waiting at the top.
Twin Lakes (Balinsasayao) to Dumaguete: FAQs
How long does it take to get from the Twin Lakes back to Dumaguete?
About 25 km and an hour to an hour and a half by private car. The time goes on the descent rather than the distance: the road down to San Jose is sealed but steep and winding, and after that it is ordinary coastal driving through Sibulan into the city. By habal-habal and bus it is more like an hour and a half or longer, plus the waits.
Is there public transport back down from the lakes?
There is no regular public route from the park gate. People who go up by public transport hire a habal-habal from San Jose for the climb, and coming down they have to find one again at the top, which is not something to count on late in the day. That is why we keep the car and driver at the gate for the whole visit.
What time should we come down, and when does the park close?
The park gate is open 8am to 5pm daily, so the car down is timed from whenever you go up rather than from the gate closing. Through the gate as it opens means a Dumaguete pickup around 6:30, an hour or two on the water, and back in the city in time for lunch. Later starts are fine, but leave the afternoon alone: visitors are commonly reported to be turned back from around 3 so nobody is on the trails at dusk, and the climb down is not one to drive in failing light. That turn-back time comes from one source rather than several, so we plan around it rather than promise it. Tell us the time you want to be back in town, or the boat you are meeting, and we work the pickup from that.
We are going up another way. Can you just bring us down?
Yes. Send the time you expect to be back at the gate and where you are going, and we send a car to meet you there. If you are not sure of the time, tell us roughly and the driver waits at the gate rather than you waiting on the road.
Can we go straight to the Dauin dive coast instead of the city?
Yes. The descent reaches the coast north of Dumaguete, so Dauin, to the south, means running on through the city. Name the resort with your quote request and the car goes straight there rather than dropping you in town to find a second ride.
We are catching a boat after the lakes. Does that work?
It can. Sibulan pier, where the fast craft to Liloan in Cebu leaves, is on the way down, before the city, and Tampi port for the Bato boat is south of Dumaguete. Tell us the sailing and we will say plainly whether the morning fits in front of it. On a boat day we would rather start through the gate early than squeeze the lakes into the gap.
It has been raining. Does that change anything?
It can. The road is sealed the whole way, but it is steep, it winds through blind curves, these slopes are landslide-prone after heavy rain, and it is the only road in or out. In bad weather we would rather move the lakes to another day, or swap in the roadside stops above Valencia, than send you down in the wet on a deadline.
Can you do the return trip, Dumaguete back to Twin Lakes (Balinsasayao)?
Yes. The same private car and driver, Dumaguete back to Twin Lakes (Balinsasayao) over the same ~25 km. Ask for both legs in one quote request and we price the round trip together. If the way back ends somewhere other than where you started, say where in the Anything else? box on the quote form and we quote that leg instead of the reverse of this one.
How much notice do you need - can I still book this for tomorrow?
Usually yes. There is no minimum notice on this route and no cut-off hour, so a request for tomorrow, or for later today, is worth sending rather than writing off. What settles it is whether a vetted driver is free for the time you need, and you will have the answer and the price by email the same day, usually within a few hours. An early start is routine here rather than a complication. The part that gets harder with less notice is choice - holding a particular vehicle size or an exact pickup hour - not whether the journey can happen, so send the date and, if the timing is tight, the hour you need to be moving.
Do I pay anything up front, and when do I pay the rest?
Nothing to ask for a quote. Once you are happy with the price it is two steps, not a choice between two: a booking fee paid online (card, bank transfer or GCash) confirms the trip and is what gets you your written confirmation, then the balance goes directly to your driver at the end of the journey. The fee is part of the all-in figure you agreed rather than an extra on top of it, and your quote states it before you pay. Free cancellation more than 72 hours before pickup refunds the fee in full.
