How do I get from Danjugan Island back to Dumaguete, and where on that coast should I be dropped?
Short answer
Danjugan Island sits off Bulata in Cauayan, on the south-west coast of Negros Occidental, and Dumaguete is on the far side of the island. Leaving means the sanctuary boat back to Antol Danjugan Port at Bulata, then roughly 190 km by road south down the west coast, round the southern tip at Siaton and up the east coast into the city. Allow about 4 to 5 hours by private car for the road leg.
The clock is set by the boat, not by us. The sanctuary runs fixed schedules: guests leave the island at 11:30 AM if they are on an overnight or the Eco Tour, and at 4:30 PM if they are on the day trip. Work it through and the 11:30 boat has you in Dumaguete somewhere around 4 to 5 in the afternoon, while the 4:30 boat means arriving at about 9 to 10 at night after a day in the sea.
Most people on this road are not really going to Dumaguete. Malatapay, the jump-off for Apo Island, is about 28 km before the city, and the Dauin dive resorts about 14 km before it, both on the same road. Siquijor boats leave from the city pier, and the fast craft to Liloan in Cebu from Sibulan, just north of the city. Tell us the real destination and the driver stops there rather than in town.
Step by step: Danjugan Island to Dumaguete
- 1Tell us which boat you are on
Overnight and Eco Tour guests come off the island at 11:30 AM, day trippers at 4:30 PM. That one detail decides what time you reach the east coast, so send it with your quote request.
- 2Boat to Antol Danjugan Port
The short crossing back to Bulata is run by the sanctuary and is already inside your visit package, so it is not part of our quote.
- 3Your driver is waiting at the port
There is no phone signal to arrange a car from the island, so the pickup is booked in advance and the driver is at Bulata before your boat lands.
- 4South down the west coast and round the tip
Through Hinoba-an and Basay into Negros Oriental, on through Bayawan, the practical stop for food and fuel, then round the southern end of the island at Siaton.
- 5Up the east coast to where you are going
The last stretch through Zamboanguita, Dauin and Bacong is the slow part of the drive. Malatapay and Dauin come before the city, Sibulan after it, so name the resort, the jump-off or the boat and we drop you there.
Ways to travel, compared
- Danjugan to Bulata boat (arranged by the sanctuary)~15-20 min
Fixed departures from the island at 11:30 AM for overnight and Eco Tour guests and 4:30 PM for day trippers. Boat transfers both ways are included in the sanctuary package, so this leg is booked and paid with them, not with us.
- Bulata to Dumaguete transfer (what we arrange)~4-5 hrs
A private air-conditioned car or van waiting at Antol Danjugan Port when your boat lands, round the south of the island to your Dumaguete hotel, a Dauin resort, Malatapay or the pier, with a stop at Bayawan if you want one. Fixed, all-in price for the car, request a quote.
- Ceres bus round the coast (public)~5.5-7 hrs
Get out to the national highway, flag a southbound Ceres bus and ride the long coast road to the Dumaguete terminal. Cheapest, but a very long day with luggage after the island, it ends at the terminal rather than your hotel or boat, and nothing about it is timed to the 11:30 or 4:30 crossing.
Danjugan Island to Dumaguete: FAQs
How long does it take to get from Danjugan Island to Dumaguete?
The boat back to Bulata is short, about 15 to 20 minutes, and then it is roughly 190 km and 4 to 5 hours by private car, the same road our Dumaguete to Danjugan page describes in the other direction. The real variable is which boat you are on: off the 11:30 AM boat you reach Dumaguete around 4 to 5 in the afternoon, off the 4:30 PM day-trip boat around 9 to 10 at night.
What time does the boat actually leave the island?
The sanctuary moved to fixed boat schedules and publishes them: departures from Danjugan at 11:30 AM for Eco Tour and overnight guests, and 4:30 PM for day trip guests and staff. Overnight check-out is 10:00 AM. These are the sanctuary’s times, not ours, and we time the car to them. Confirm your own slot with them when you book, because a schedule like this can change.
We are going to Dauin or Apo Island, not Dumaguete. Where should the driver drop us?
Where you are actually going. The Dauin dive resorts are about 14 km before the city and Malatapay, the Apo Island jump-off, about 28 km before it, both on this same road, so driving into town and back out only adds time to an already long day. Off the 11:30 boat you reach that coast late in the afternoon, which is too late for an Apo crossing the same day, so plan Apo for the next morning and stay in Dauin or near Malatapay.
Can we catch the Siquijor boat or the Cebu ferry the same day?
Do not plan on it. Off the 11:30 boat you reach Dumaguete around 4 to 5 in the afternoon at best, and off the 4:30 boat it is late evening, so either way you would be relying on the last sailing of the day with no slack if the road runs long. The safer shape is a night in Dumaguete and a morning crossing. Siquijor boats go from the city pier; the fast craft to Liloan in Cebu goes from Sibulan, north of the city, so tell us which boat you are booked on, not which port you think it uses.
Can we break the drive somewhere on the way?
Yes, and on 4 to 5 hours of road it is usually a better day. Sipalay is 30 to 45 minutes from Bulata if you want lunch and a beach hour first, and Bayawan, the biggest town on the corridor between the two coasts, is the practical stop for food and fuel. Put the stop in the "Stops along the way" field on the quote form and it is built into the timing.
What happens if the sea is rough and the boat does not run?
The sanctuary cancels visits on a Coast Guard advisory, gale warning or storm signal, and says the pick-up point at Bulata can move in poor weather or unfavourable tides. If your boat moves, tell us and we move the car with it at no extra charge. Leave slack between Danjugan and anything with a fixed departure, such as a flight out of Dumaguete or a booked crossing.
Is the boat from the island part of your transfer?
No. Boat transfers from Brgy. Bulata and back are included in the sanctuary’s own packages, so that leg is arranged and paid with them. Our quote covers the road from Antol Danjugan Port to wherever you are going on the Dumaguete side.
Can you do the return trip, Dumaguete back to Danjugan Island?
Yes. Your boat brings you back to the mainland jump-off, where your driver picks you up for the road leg to Danjugan Island. The boat is arranged and paid there, as on the way out. Ask for both road legs in one quote request and we price them together. If the way back ends somewhere other than where you started, say where in the Anything else? box on the quote form and we quote that leg instead of the reverse of this one.
How much notice do you need - can I still book this for tomorrow?
Usually yes. There is no minimum notice on this route and no cut-off hour, so a request for tomorrow, or for later today, is worth sending rather than writing off. What settles it is whether a vetted driver is free for the time you need, and you will have the answer and the price by email the same day, usually within a few hours. An early start is routine here rather than a complication. The part that gets harder with less notice is choice - holding a particular vehicle size or an exact pickup hour - not whether the journey can happen, so send the date and, if the timing is tight, the hour you need to be moving.
Do I pay anything up front, and when do I pay the rest?
Nothing to ask for a quote. Once you are happy with the price it is two steps, not a choice between two: a booking fee paid online (card, bank transfer or GCash) confirms the trip and is what gets you your written confirmation, then the balance goes directly to your driver at the end of the journey. The fee is part of the all-in figure you agreed rather than an extra on top of it, and your quote states it before you pay. Free cancellation more than 72 hours before pickup refunds the fee in full.
Do you book the boat, or do I?
You book the island visit, and it has to be arranged in advance - Danjugan is a managed conservation reserve and visitor numbers are deliberately capped, so access, guiding and any overnight go through the reserve rather than through us. The boat off the island also leaves at a fixed published time you cannot bring forward, which is what sets your return drive. We quote the private road leg to the Bulata jump-off in Cauayan and back, timed around the booking you hold. Book the reserve first, then tell us the boat times in the "Ferry or boat" box and we will build the day around them.
Dumaguete → Danjugan Island
